Boards and Commissions Offer Citizens Opportunities to Get Involved


More than 500 volunteers serve without compensation on nearly 40 City of Charlotte committees known as Boards and Commissions.

Several vacancies exist on the following boards and committees to which Charlotte City Council makes appointments.  These are volunteer positions on a wide variety of boards with differing time commitments. All applicants must be registered to vote in Mecklenburg County.

VACANCIES ON CITY COUNCIL BOARDS

On Monday, April 12, 2010, City Council will make nominations to fill vacant positions or make reappointments on the following boards: 

1.  BUSINESS ADVISORY COMMITTEE* -Three appointments for three year terms beginning April 29, 2010.  Karen Henning, Robert Barkman and Tariq Bokhari are eligible and would like to be reappointed.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month. Meets 3rd Friday, 7:30 am. CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

 2.  CHARLOTTE INTERNATIONAL CABINET* - Eight appointments for three year terms beginning July 1, 2010.  Maryanne Dailey, Dale Gillmore, Sue Gorman, Charles Lansden, Judith Osei-Tutu and Gail VanDerVeer are eligible and would like to be reappointed. 
Mary Ward is eligible, but is not interested in reappointment.
Jeff Linker is not eligible for reappointment as he has completed his term of service.
Time commitment: 5-6 hours/month.  Meets 1st Thurs, bi-monthly, 8 am, CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

3.  CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG PUBLIC ACCESS CORPORATION* - Three appointments for three year terms beginning July 1, 2010.  George Cochran is eligible and would like to be reappointed.    
Sue Korenstein and Kevin Wardlaw are not eligible for reappointment as they have completed their terms of service.
Time commitment: 2 hours/quarterly.  Meets 3rd Wed quarterly, 6:30 pm, 613 Calvert.

4. CHARLOTTE REGIONAL VISITORS AUTHORITY* - One appointment for a three year term for a hotel representative beginning July 1, 2010.
Joe Hallow is eligible and would like to be reappointed.
One appointment for a three year term for an at-large representative beginning July 1, 2010.
Anthony Fox is not eligible for reappointment as he has completed his term of service.
Time commitment: 2 hours/month. Meets 2nd Wed, 8 am, Convention Ctr, 501 S. College.4. 

5.  CIVIL SERVICE BOARD  - One appointment for a three year term beginning May 16, 2010.
T. Michael Todd is not eligible for reappointment as he has completed his terms of service.
Time commitment: 1 hour/month plus 2 to 5 hearings which can last entire day(s).
Meets  1st Tuesday, 4 pm, CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

6.  COMMUNITY RELATIONS* - Thirteen appointments for three year terms beginning July 1, 2010.
Victoria Carter, Marty Viser, Constance Green-Johnson, Joe Cooper, Sharon Ingram, Ashley Oster and Madelyn Baer are all eligible and would like to be reappointed.
Elizabeth Troutman and Robin Edgar are eligible, but are not interested in reappointment.
Maura Chavez, Judy Marshall, Kimberly Munn and Deborah Walker are not eligible for reappointment as they have completed their terms of service.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month.  Meets 3rd Tues, 4 pm, Covenant Presb. Church, 1000 E. Morehead St.

7.  HISTORIC DISTRICT* - Five appointments for specific historic districts beginning July 1, 2010 as follows:  
     - One appointment for Wesley Heights Historic District for a residential property owner. Gregory Grueneich is eligible and would like to be reappointed.
     - Two appointments for Dilworth Historic District (one as residential property owner, one as business owner) Jonathan Crotty and John Phares, Jr. are not eligible for reappointment as they have completed their terms of service.
     - One appointment for Plaza-Midwood Historic District for a residential property owner. Damon Rumsch is not eligible for reappointment as he has completed his terms of service.
     - One appointment for Fourth Ward Historic District for a residential property owner. Jeff Koenig has resigned, due to his move from Fourth Ward.
Time commitment: 10 hours/month.  Meets 2nd Wed, 3 pm, CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

8.  HOUSING TRUST FUND ADVISORY BOARD* - Two appointments for three year terms beginning May 1, 2010.  Tylee Kessler and Eric Montgomery are eligible and would like to be reappointed. 
Time commitment: 2 hours/month.  Meets 2nd Thurs, 4 pm, Old City Hall

9.  KEEP CHARLOTTE BEAUTIFUL* - Three appointments for three year terms beginning July 1, 2010.  Rosemary Hall, Charles Prendergast and Stephen Scott are eligible and would like to be reappointed. 
Time commitment: 1-2/hours/month.  Meets 1st Mon, 12:00 pm, CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

10. NEIGHBORHOOD MATCHING GRANTS FUND REVIEW TEAM* - Five vacancies for two year terms beginning April 16, 2010.  Virginia Keogh and Joseph Rambert are eligible and would like to be reappointed. 
Shirley Stevenson is eligible, but is not interested in reappointment.
Ralphine Caldwell and Bernadette Johnson are not eligible for reappointment as they have completed their terms of service.
Time commitment: 14 hours/year.  Meets quarterly, 12:00 pm, Old City Hall.

11. RESIDENTIAL RENTAL PROPERTY REVIEW BOARD - Four appointments for staggered initial terms beginning immediately with two appointments ending June 30, 2013, one appointment ending June 30, 2012 and one appointment ending June 30, 2011.  Members of the Board shall be representative of the residential rental, tenant and homeowner community.
This is a new board created by Ordinance #4307 by City Council on November 9, 2009.
Time commitment:  Initial training and orientation 4-5 hours.  Hearings to be conducted during evening hours as needed.  Meets CMPD Headquarters, 601 E. Trade St.

12. PLANNING COMMISSION* - Two appointments for three year terms beginning July 1, 2010.  Tracy Finch Dodson and Zaundra Yolanda Johnson are eligible and would like to be reappointed. One appointment as nominated by CMS School Board for a three year term beginning July 1, 2010.  Wesley Simmons is not eligible for reappointment as he has completed his terms of service.
Time commitment:  24 hours/month.  Meets 1st Mon, 12:00 pm, CMGC, 600 E. 4th St.

13. PUBLIC ART COMMISSION* - One appointment for a community-at-large representative for a three year term beginning July 1, 2010.
Sabrina Brown is eligible and would like to be reappointed.
Time commitment:  2 hours/month.  Meets 4th Wed., 12:00 pm, 227 W. Trade St.

14. STORM WATER SERVICES ADVISORY* - One appointment for a representative of a residential neighborhood** for a three year term beginning July 1, 2010. 
Eaton Gravely Reid is eligible and would like to be reappointed.
Time commitment:  4-5 hours/month.  Meets 3rd Thurs, 4:30 pm, 700 N. Tryon St.

15. WASTE MANAGEMENT ADVISORY BOARD - One recommendation for appointment by Board of County Commissioners for a three year term beginning May 19, 2010.  Gregory Scharlemann has resigned.
Time commitment:  4 hours/month.  Meets 3rd Tues, 11:30 am, 700 N. Tryon St.

  *Board has some incumbents eligible for reappointment.

**Storm Water Services holds an annual lottery with City, County and Committee representatives to determine which category each will appoint.  City's 2010 category pick is Residential Neighborhood.  Mr. Reid serves in that category as a current County appointee,

Tuesday, March 30, 2010, 5:00 PM.

*These boards/committees have vacancies in which the incumbent is not eligible for reappointment.  Therefore, a new member will be appointed; the other boards have incumbents who may be reappointed to their position.

City Council has an attendance policy that requires you to attend 65 percent of all regular, special and assigned subcommittee meetings from the time your term begins until the end of this calendar year and each subsequent calendar year thereafter; and you may not miss three consecutive regular meetings of this board. If you fail to meet either of these two requirements you will automatically be removed from the board per City Council's policy. You must attend 50% of each meeting in order to be counted present. In addition,

City Council also has a reappointment policy that states if you wish to be considered for another term, you must have attended at least 75 percent of all regular, special and assigned subcommittee meetings over the course of your term in order to be eligible for reappointment
