The Charlotte Fire Department currently employs over 1,100 men and women, with approximately 90% of our workforce in the Operations Division.  Our hiring needs vary from year to year, but one thing remains the same--we want the best individuals possible to carry on our tradition of excellence in fire and emergency services.

Effective January 8, 2010 all applications from the 2009 Firefighter Hiring Process are closed.

2010 HIRING PROCESS

Written test results and CPAT instructions (for those that pass the written exam) will be emailed to applicants by Friday, February 19th.  Email will be the primary method of communication for the 2010 hiring process.  Applicants may update their information anytime by returning to the online application website.

We anticipate conducting a hiring process in 2011.  For information about the 2011 interest list, please see information below.

2011 INTEREST LIST (mailing list)

Please click here to add your information to the 2011 Firefighter Applicant Interest List. 
Note:  The interest list is a emailing list only and you are not pre-registering for the 2011 hiring process.  You only need to register once.  Emailing will occur a few weeks before 2011 test registration opens. 

** Do not rely on this emailing alone, although you enter your own information we usually have hundreds returned annually. We recommend you begin checking our website in December on a weekly to bi-weekly basis for any updates.  It is your responsibility to keep yourself informed.**

Requirements and Hiring Process

Firefighter candidates must successfully complete all of the following steps to be considered for employment:

  • Written Examination
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test © (CPAT)
  • Background Interview & Application Packet Review
  • Background Investigation (including references, work history, credit, criminal, and driving records)
  • Panel Interview
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Pre-Employment Medical Examination and Drug Screening 
  • Civil Service Certification
